As a colorist that sees an abundance of blonde tresses daily, I'm often asked by my clients what they can do to increase hair growth rapidly and how to maintain the uptomost best hair health for out side of the salon. I have put together my knowledge of ways to acheive and keep the healthiest blonde hair possible!
As blondes, we often sacrifice the health of our hair by consistently lightening it to the perfect shade and making sure the highlights flow seamlessly with tortorous daily heat styling. It is very possible to have healthy and strong blonde locks without sacrificing your highlight appointments or cute daily curls!
Normal hair grows at a rate of about 1/2 inch per month. But, this varies by our genetics. Hair growth is also effected by nutrition, stress levels, moisture, heat and oil balance. Proper treatment of the hair and scalp along with proper nutrition will allow you to reach your maximum potential hair growth. Hear are some tips to help.
Hair is made up of about 97% protein. Without enough protein, your body can't replace the hairs that you naturally shed every day and can make your hair become dry, brittle, or weak. Protien is essential to the hairs health and is also what your hair is made of. When the hair is lightened, protien is signifigantly removed and the cuticle loses the elasticity and strength it once had at a virgin state. It is possible to lighten your hair and replace the protein to reconstruct the hair strand and create strong healthy hairs. One of the best way to rebuild the hair after lightening is through a protien mask or treatment. My absolute favorite is Moroccan Oil Reconstructive Mask. Keratin Smoothing Treatments also work well to repair the hair while also cutting blow drying time in half and eliminating frizz.
2. Stop the breakage.
A big part of growing your hair out is preventing breakage. Whether it be you tieing your hairtie too tight in the same spot daily, combing your hair with a fine tooth comb, stress, poor nutrition, or not providing it with enough moisture so it becomes dry and breaks off, stopping the breakage is a key component in growing long hair. Apply an oil-rich serum to the hair daily to retain moisture and prevent ends from breaking.
3. Weekly Deep conditiong treatments.
Weekly deep conditioning treatments are extremely beneficial for growing out your hair. Find a mask that offers moisture and repair all-in-one. Blaine has a great mask that offers all of that!
4. The dreaded "trim" word.
Cutting hair does not make hair grow faster from the roots. This is a myth. It does, however, stop the loss of length from the tips, as it prevents breakage from split ends. Finding a hair stylist that can lightly texturize your ends so that only the damage is getting snipped is important. Point cutting the very tips will prevent the damage from splitting up the hair shaft and prevents more breakage in the long run.. Trimming your ends every 6-8 weeks is greatly beneficial.
Biotin is a vitamin supplement that has tons of beauty benefits. It not only prevents hair loss, it increases healthy hair growth, reduces acne, fights aging and adds a luster to dull skin.
6. Scalp stimulation.
Every time you shampoo your hair, include a good deep scalp rub with the suds from your shampoo. Stimulating the hair follicles will increase blood flow to the scalp which will promote hair growth.
When it comes to healthy hair, it doesn't matter just what you put on your hair but what you digest as well plays a big part in hair growth. Foods that are great for healthy hair growth are:
-Salmon: Very rich in protein, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids.
-Walnuts: Very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E and a significant amount of Biotin.
-Eggs: Eggs are loaded with four key minerals: zinc, selenium, sulfur, and iron. Iron is especially important, because it helps cells carry oxygen to the hair follicles, and too little iron (anemia) is a major cause of hair loss, particularly in women.
-Greek yogurt: Not only one of my personal favorite munchies, but greek yogurt is packed with protein, vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid -- an ingredient you'll often see on hair care product labels), and vitamin D.
-Blueberries: Blueberries are packed with vitamin C, which is critical for circulation to the scalp and supports the tiny blood vessels that feed the hair follicles.
-Chicken: When it comes to foods high in protein, as well as hair-healthy zinc, iron, and B vitamins to keep strands strong and plentiful, foods such as chicken, turkey, fish and lean cuts of beef are at the top of the list for healthy hair growth.
8. Good shampoo and conditioner.
Like I often tell clients, it's worth it to buy salon quality shampoo and conditioners because of the quality in the ingredients. Store bought shampoos such as Tresemme or Pantene have cleansing detergents similar to your laundry detergent and cheap silicone agents in the conditioners that never actually benefit the hair. Go for salon brand shampoo products that are sulfate and paraben free.
9. Reduce stress
Emotional stress or trauma can greatly stunt hair growth and even cause hair loss. Learn how to de-stress by living a healthy lifestyle and seek solutions and answers for existing problems that are stressing you out. Exercise is a great way to release built up stress. Jogging, swimming, lifting light weights, or even walking is part of a healthy lifestyle. It will help your body process foods and vitamins, sleep better, and reduce large amounts of stress.
